You join a CrossFit gym.
You started because you wanted to get in shape. You didn’t care about scores, or weight on the bar, or your Fran time.
As you start coming consistently you start to realize how cool it feels to be strong. Your back squat jumps 30 lbs in a month, you feel like you’re close to toes to bar, and you can’t wait to keep coming back.
Then, slowly….
The PR’s stop coming around so often.
You have a nagging pain in your shoulder.
So-and-so beat you in a workout.
We see this all too often. As the glamour starts to wear off the workouts might not seem so enticing anymore; the boredom starts to kick in.
No matter what fitness path you choose, this can happen. It’s like the honeymoon phase of a relationship; you meet the person, it’s all kicks and giggles… and then you start to see the weird little quirks your partner has. They snore in their sleep, they’re always late, they’re obsessed with IPA’s…
It’s only natural for things like this to occur. That’s why it’s important to start enjoying the journey, celebrating the movement that your body does every day, and expecting there to be bumpy roads.
You will experience setbacks. You will have periods of time that you feel like you’re not making progress. You may have days that you run out and slam the door behind you. But the sooner you can accept and embrace these facts (and stop basing your enjoyment of movement on achievement) the happier you will be.
