“When things slow down I will start doing xyz”
Waiting for the perfect moment is something we hear a lot of.
We want life to settle down before we really start hammering away at our goals: that way we can really stay focused.
Unfortunately we’re pretty positive the moment you’re waiting for doesn’t exist… and if it does, it doesn’t exist for long!
Sure, there are instances when this is valid; you could have some major life issues happening that make it so you simply don’t have the headspace to think about anything else other than your current situation.
If that’s not the case, you might be waiting for a moment in life where everything slow down and is filled with ease.
We have yet to see this happen for ourselves. As soon as one thing is over, there’s something right there behind it to replace.
What we think the major root of the problem is doesn’t actually have to do with our current life situation.
Quite often it’s more about managing our expectations of what we need to do and what progress we expect to see.
For instance:
You want to lose 20lbs. You know that if you get really strict with your diet, it’s something you can manage to do in 3 months. You just need to get past some big life events before you can really kick things in to gear.
While the above may be true, that kind of fast progress might really require some diligence. What’s more, it might be hard for you to sustain.
Vs:
Taking a look at what small steps you could start taking today that could have a major impact over the course of a year.
We know that approach sounds far less sexy. Who wants to gradually change??
But think of this: If you’re not in a position to make any major life changes right now, what’s the harm in starting with something manageable you can do every day for the next week without adding any stress to your life? Are the results truly not worth it, or do you just need to manage your expectations on what progress is supposed to look like?
