So you have an injury.
Things were going so well. You were making progress, your workouts were feeling strong, you finally lost a few pounds.
Then seemingly out of nowhere something bad happens. Maybe it gradually got worse over time, maybe it was a specific event you can remember that has left you limited with movements.
There’s no way around it: injuries suck. They often put you in a funk and have you wondering if you’ll ever train normally again.
Here’s the thing: Injury is somewhat inevitable. It’s dangerous business walking out your front door 😉
We as humans take risks every single day doing pretty much anything, and training is no exception. At some point in time it is likely you will encounter some form of an injury.
How can we stay moving despite?
-
Mindset matters.
I’m a big proponent of allowing time to mourn (depending on the severity of the injury of course) and feeling all the feels right after it happens. It’s important, however, not to stay in this state. Once it has happened there is no going back, so don’t waste your emotional energy staying in a state of feeling sorry for yourself. There is never any going back, so try to quickly change your mindset to thinking about what you can control in the situation. -
Focus on the things you CAN do.
Rather than going to the gym and constantly thinking about all the things you can’t do anymore, focus on the things you can. The coaches at Locomotive are ready and willing to give you modifications to keep you moving. -
Celebrate movement.
Life is not all RXing workouts and PRing every month. Injury provides us the opportunity to celebrate movement in all its forms. We all have ONE body that can do amazing things; including healing from injuries. Remember to thank your body for all the things it can do on daily basis. We sure do ask a lot of it after all! -
Try focusing on something new.
Back injury? Focus on strict gymnastics.
Shoulder injury? Focusing on improving your core strength and building up stronger legs.
We could go on, but you get it. Having an injury doesn’t mean you can’t move! -
Don’t. Stop.
It might be tempting to quit when we’re dealing with an injury. There’s a saying “motion is lotion”
While you may not be able to train at the same intensity or volume as you did before, it’s still important to stay moving. For certain injuries stopping movement all together is only doing more harm than good.
